That is one uncomfortable looking chair. Only a Plugger would keep and use an uncomfortable chair for 60 odd years.

Pluggers are stubborn beasts, especially senior Pluggers. It matters not to them if a chair is uncomfortable: they paid good money for it, and so they'll sit it in until it can't be sat in anymore! Then they'll use it for firewood.
That's Plugger recycling.
