Sunday the 2nd

Law and Order marathon!

Just thinking about Lennie tarnishes this comic.

You know, William Kitzman, some people take such pride in avoiding the trappings of the so-called 'liberal elite', that they think of themselves as elite, and better than everyone.

"Hybrid? Global warming! Haw-haw! It snowed yesterday. Al Gore invented the internet, you know."

So is it a hybrid because it's car with a truck bed, or because he's carrying a rake and organic materials in the bed? (Body parts, not grass.)

The modern 'hybrid vehicle' of today's Plugger/redneck/conservative elite is an SUV with a truck bed. Get with the times, Brookins!

I don't read Pluggers on Sunday, so I didn't see this one until I visited your site today and started reading your old posts.

Your first hypothesis (car with truck bed) is correct. Otherwise Brookins wouldn't have taken great pains to recreate the "El Camino" lettering on the side.

I'm torn between pleasure that Brookins gave his blessing to the El Camino rather than the Ranchero, and the disappointment and malaise I always feel when I recognize myself and my family members as Pluggers. My dad has an El Camino, my youngest brother has a GMC Sprint (the GM version of the El Camino), and my other brother has two El Caminos, one in Hawaii and one for when he visits us in Boise. They're so proud of them. They love to take them to car shows and have all three sitting all in a row.

One note on the "hybrid" aspect of an El Camino -- and a great story about my dad. Chevy does not call the El Camino a car. It calls it a truck. It is sort of designed to give you a best-of-both-worlds sort of approach, but as far as Chevy's concerned, it's a truck. So at one car show a few years ago, Dad entered it in the "original truck" category. He was one of only two entries. The other guy looked at Dad's El Camino and sneered, "Oh, that's a truck." Dad pulled out the manual, which on the first page said, "Congratulations on owning your new truck." The guy grumbled something and went back to preparing his own truck for display. He popped the hood. The engine was full of gleaming chrome. Dad piped up and said, "Oh, that's original."
The guy had to put his truck in the modified vehicle category. Dad won his category by default.

When it comes to cars, I'm just guessing and thinking of the cars I see while walking.

An El Camino looks like a car to me, probably because my mom has a truck truck, and cars are closer to the ground. (Little sis has a car, it's like we're crawling on the road.)

That story about your dad is cool. But I don't think Pluggers take that kind of pride in their vehicles.

Wait, I have decided that they definitely do not - cars are for drivin', not showin' off. I'm the only one doing a daily (once or twice a month) Pluggers blog, so I make the rules.
