The comic:

Wow.

That is one bizarre and terrifying image.

Wednesday April 20th

The comic:

He looks so sad.

He has a recliner, but no TV. This is Rhinoman, after all.

Thursday March 10th

The comic:

Why does he have a helmet on?

Pluggers eat pizza. Wow. That sure is unique behavior.

Tuesday March 8th

The comic:

Another way of saying Pluggers are fat. That is so worth the paycheck Brookins gets.

Friday February 18th

The comic:

Because conservative = cautious? He wants to conserve his pants? He thinks the tradition of wearing suspenders should be kept alive?

Oh, is he dressed conservatively?

Yeah, I got nothing. But hey! Rhinoman!

Tuesday July 6th

This blog is very important in the summer, because it lets me know what day it is. Only problem is, I update it before going to bed, so even though it's technically Tuesday, it's not Tuesday til I wake up at 8. (And then go back to bed until Jeopardy at 3:30.)

The comic:

Those legs are quite scary - why aren't his arms equally thin?

I always say the best part about being fat is the boobies. Because of medications, I've gained some weight over the last couple months (like fast enough to get tons of stretch marks) and yes, my boobs have grown.

Poor men, they don't have an acceptable place for fat. Except men get less guilt over being fat, so...

Also, it's cute that they call it a "diet" - we know it means that RhinoMan is starving because he's so poor.

And the gender change is... interesting. I guess they couldn't show a sad chicken or dog lady looking sadly at her deflated chest. Too risqué, I'd imagine.

You know, in this country, I think it costs more to lose weight on purpose than it does to gain it. Fat camps are expensive, diet food is expensive, and no one ever factors in the time - sometimes you don't have the time for the exercise or the counting of calories or of points. Or the money for weight watchers, because people who have lost weight say a support group helps a lot.

I read something interesting at the Fat Nutritionist (that I can't find right now) about why those ignorant poor, fat people buy fast food instead of healthy fruit. Fruit doesn't have a lot of calories. We need calories (aka food) to live. 10 bucks gets you more calories at McDonalds than it does at a fruit stand. That made a lot of sense to me when I read it, something just clicked.

Me? My doctors haven't told me to lose weight, so I'm doing my hardest not to care. I've got some comfy shorts, maybe I'll have to buy new pants in October or something (maybe my weight will have dropped 50 pounds by then - who knows with me), my pajamas fit (it's summer), and I walk when I can (heat, pain). Food? When I feel like shit, I eat what I want. Eating something grody (or dangerous - like broccoli) when I'm in excruciating pain... that's just inhumane, man.

Thursday July 1st

The comic:

Only Pluggers bought T-shirts at events before 2000.

I'd say we're all Pluggers, but we also wear things from after 2000, so we're safe. I think.

However, if I found an interesting design on a shirt from an event at Goodwill or something, I may get it. And don't doubt hipsters. Also, there are undoubtedly new shirts made up with the poster for Woodstock on it, or for any concert from the '60s or '70s.

And of course it's bluegrass.

Monday May 24th

The comic:

Because he handles iron, geddit?

This isn't objectionable, it's not funny by any means, but look, he's got a job! They're talking about a movie that came out recently!

But you'd think Pluggers would enjoy comic books and movies made from them - don't Pluggers deserve 2 hours or so of escapism in some AC?

Saturday May 8th

The comic:

His ears scare me. Also, going on the RhinoMan's story - he is at a friend or relative's house and they lent him decent pajamas. Or he broke in and put on the pjs and is raiding the fridge because his biggest fantasy in life is having a midnight snack. Ha, imagined poverty is funny!

Also, he's not thinking outside the box. If he was, we'd see an open cupboard (though the angles that would require showing more than RhinoMan and an open fridge in a blank void would probably break our heads) or at least the freezer would be open. That would be literal.

Is this supposed to be literal - he'll take food out of the box. Or is it, ha, Pluggers only think of food and that's funny because um, it just is.

No idea.

I'm not doing better health wise, but school is over (except for a 12 page paper, I just want to take an F, I'm so lazy) and I'm on the couch and the dogs need to be in. So mentally, I'm in a better place. So Monday, maybe?

Wednesday March 31st

The comic:

The caption says, "After a plugger has lived it up, he has to live it down." It was sent in by Brad Wesner of Simpsonville, South Carolina and the box says "Thanks to..." which is nice, I guess. There are four Pluggers, two standing, two sitting. One is seated on the other side of the counter, and one is standing on the other side as well, so we can two fully, including the RhinoMan Plugger. A Bear Plugger is seated close to us, and a Dog Plugger is the other one sitting, holding up pictures and grinning a smug grin with his teeth showing. He is saying, "Remember the St. Patrick's Day Party, Andy, when you wore that lampshade on your head?" They appear to be in a diner and the fourth person is a female Plugger and I cannot tell her breed - no rabbit ears, no chicken beak. She is laughing. RhinoMan has no expression I can understand, but "Andy," the bear one looks horrified.

Anyways, Pluggers don't get to have fun that often and when they do, their so-called friends like to make fun of them. Pluggerville seems like a great place to live!

Also, lampshade on the head? Wow, creative!

And RhinoMan has no embarrassing pictures. I imagine he was eating at a booth (alone) and came over because he wanted to be part of the public shaming. I wonder how the Dog Plugger will use the pictures. Blackmail, of course, but what does he want?

Thursday March 11th

The comic:

So are they getting fatter or older? Either way, I don't see an attempt at either humor or heart-warming-ness. Why can't I get Plugger readers to comment and explain what the fucking fuck this comic is for. (Duck & Cover gets conservative trolls all the damn time.)

And the part left unsaid (but seen in Rhinoman's defeated expression) - they can't afford better fitting clothing.

Isn't it hilarious when your body changes and you can't afford to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe?

Aside from Rhinoman's expression - probably unintentional - this really illustrates how BAD an artist Brookins is. I can believe he was a political cartoonist, most of them are utter hacks who need tons of labels to let us know that horse shaped blob is in fact supposed to represent the GOP, while the one with the trunk is the Democratic party.

And then there's old political cartoons - talking 100 years old - such quality! Of course, the comics back then were much better drawn as well. I'm not a total crank - I do like some of today's comics. I want to buy all the Pearls Before Swine treasuries (I just bought the first one Sgt. Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic and it includes notes from Pastis next to comics. "This is why I don't draw recliners."), all the FoxTrot books, Mutts is adorable, Get Fuzzy rocks. (I have many Far Side books, not enough Calvin and Hobbes and I think all of Bloom County.)

But my love of PBS shows I'm no art snob. I also like xkcd. It's all about knowing what you can do. I think Brookins, like Tinsley, thinks he can draw. Oh, he can draw better than I can, but he still sucks. Big time.

I often wonder why he chose to use animals. Maybe if I'm bored enough I'll e-mail him and ask. But I'll be respectful and not include a link here!

According to Wikipedia, it's in 60 papers, in prime Plugger places like the South (it's never been here and I don't remember seeing it when I read the comics in the Atlanta paper a billion years ago), Mid-West, Plains states, and the Rockies.

Who knows - if newspapers don't die out, it may be in more papers as the population ages and becomes more Pluggerfied.

Wednesday March 3rd

The comic:

Won't hurting your back end up costing you more money in the long run?

And we get firewood from my uncle. Where is he getting his wood to chop? That shit's expensive.

Tuesday February 16th

The comic:

Pluggers have no patience and cannot amuse themselves when stuck in a line.

It's called a book. It's also called an mp3 player, though that doesn't always work because you might miss your name or number being called. Or an expensive cell phone - surf the web while you wait! I have an ipod with no connection to the internet, but I uploaded some funny videos and I watched them one day while waiting for class to start.

Of course, this assumes you like reading. That's the most basic thing. Why else would I carry a purse? I always take a book, even on a 2 am Taco Bell run - you never know!

So what do Pluggers do? Whine about the situation and do nothing to make it better. I'm not the most social person, but if the line was that bad, I may start talking to the people around me. We all deal with the weather. And long lines.

But Pluggers don't want life to be fun, they want to whine. No sympathy!

Saturday February 13th

The comic:

It's not a t-shirt and I don't see any visible stains, so stop giving my man the stink-eye, you snobs!

Wait - a cocktail party? Pluggers drink cocktails? Pluggers go to cocktail parties? Pluggers officially have more social snob cred than I do. Okay, so I hate parties, but I've never even been invited. (Do they put "cocktail party" on the invites? Sophisticated Plugger readers - help!)

They probably think he's there to fix something.

The drawing of "society" types is just bad, though the proportions aren't as bad as with my man.

This raises so many questions - who throws cocktail parties in Pluggerville? New arrivals who have yet to be replaced by pod people? Is cocktail party a euphemism for some kind of sacrifice to keep Pluggers alive? Is this an initiation ceremony for the snobby couple pictured? Is RhinoMan an innocent and not allowed to see these kind of things? Was he sent by his company for the electrical part of the initiation?

So many questions, but none answer my question of why my brand new computer won't install itunes so I can rock out with youtube. Plus, I really need to add new songs because guess who's seeing My Name Is Khan? Yeah, me. I bet the people who are mean to the title character are Pluggers, except they live in San Fran, and I don't think Pluggers like California.

Questions questions...

For those who do, enjoy Valentine's Day. For me? I may see MNIK a second time, do homework, watch the Simpsons, study, and do a snow day dance.

Monday January 18th

The comic:

You know, I'm a liberal elitist but not a vegetarian and I've never had anything called "surf and turf." I know it refers to steak and ... some kind of seafood in the same meal, but I hate steak.

I like fried spam sometimes, and I love me some tuna (but let me make it, you don't know how!), but spam and tuna together? Barf city!

But hey - RhinoMan can afford both tuna and spam - not to mention bread! 2010 is starting nicely for him.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Tuesday January 5th

The comic:

Like... paper? Money?

(Since it's RhinoMan, we can assume it's money he got through a pawn shop or by selling bodily fluids and/or parts.)

This makes no effing sense. Pluggers are packrats? (female) Pluggers don't carry purses? What the hell?

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

Tuesday December 8th

The comic:

I'm somewhat smaller than a rhinoceros and my dog is bigger than the one in the drawing.

She doesn't like me resting my feet on her. Unless I'm using my feet to give her a belly rub.

So basically... this is wrong. Because my personal experience is just as valid as Greg Wilson's. And he's in Oregon, the elitist! I'm in Tennessee, where the real people are.

Friday December 4th

The comic:

How can he afford a coffee maker? Or the electricity to run it? I am confused.
